The Colourful Houses and Restaurants of Nyhavn, Copenhagen, Denmark

For your next holiday, visit Copenhagen, Denmark - a jewel within the Nordic region   by Martin McAllister

Little Mermaid, Copenhagen, DenmarkCopenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, holds a wealth of magnificent attractions and exudes an undeniably captivating charm; in fact, Copenhagen was recently ranked as one of the world's best cities to live in. But what is it that makes this city so amazing? There’s really only one way to find out – that is by paying a visit to Copenhagen yourself!

There is a great deal to see in Copenhagen, and there are a variety of ways in which to experience it all. You might like to take a guided bus or walking tour for a comprehensive excursion; however, it's also a great idea to hire a bike and sightsee at your own pace. Some of the city's main attractions include the old port of Nyhavn, Copenhagen City Hall and the Rosenborg Castle. However, if you're looking to escape towards the city's more serene settings, you could head to the peaceful Tivoli Gardens or to Bellevue Beach instead. Another must-see attraction - and undoubtedly one of the most famous in Copenhagen - is the harbour's Little Mermaid statue, which is a monument to fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Anderson.

Pedestrians at Stroget, the World's Longest Pedestrian Shopping Strip, Copenhagen, DenmarkFor visitors interested in the arts, Copenhagen boasts a number of museums, galleries and theatres. Among the most popular are the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, The Royal Theatre, the Glyptotek Art Museum and the Frilandsmuseet open-air museum. Copenhagen is also well known for its music scene - particularly jazz, and the city even hosts an annual festival - called the Copenhagen Jazz Festival; with its unparalleled splendour, it attracts countless people.

If you love shopping, you'll have a field day on Stroget - a pedestrianised shopping street in central Copenhagen. The street is also known for providing free entertainment - in the form of music, magic, juggling and more - particularly between the Nytorv and Hojbro Plads. And for anyone who loves to try different foods, Copenhagen boasts an impressive array of cuisines - but don't forget to try traditional favourites such as "smorrebrod" and the renowned freshly baked danishes!

If you're considering a holiday, you'll find a number of hotels in Copenhagen city centre, where you can be close to the city's top attractions. Or, if your trip to Copenhagen is business-related, you could choose to stay near the airport instead. You'll also find that most hotels conveniently offer meeting rooms and conference halls for groups of all sizes. However, rest assured that whatever your reason for travelling to this wonderful city may be, you're guaranteed to be taken aback with its culture, beauty and sheer magnificence.

Tivoli Gardens   by Nedko Kolev

One of Copenhagen's most famous tourist attractions, the Tivoli Gardens opened in 1843. This highly popular entertainment park combines all the fun of fairground rides with fountains and fireworks, concerts and ballets, top-quality restaurants and fast-food outlets. Based on the 18th-century ornamental gardens popular in Europe at the time, Tivoli features Chinese-style pagodas and Moorish pavilions, as well as the Hanging Gardens and the Bubble Fountain.

Among the many fairground rides are a traditional roller coaster, a ferris wheel, and a "freefall" tower, as well as rides designed especially for children. You can also have fun in the amusement arcades and shooting galleries.

The gardens are at their most enthralling after dusk, when thousands of tiny lights illuminate the park. At night, open-air theaters host all forms of entertainment, from jugglers to jazz bands and performances of Italian Commedia Dell`Arte. On Wednesdays and Saturdays there is a spectacular fireworks display just before midnight.

Lake in Tivoli Gardens Illuminated for Christmas Market, Copenhagen, Denmark
A good time to visit Tivoli is between late November and Christmas. At this time, the gardens are transformed into a bustling Christmas fair, where you can sample traditional Danish seasonal fare, buy many specialty Christmas gifts, and ice-skate on Tivoli Lake.
