The Town Of Slough Situated In
Berkshire County, England by Simon Haughtone
The town of Slough, Berkshire, lies neatly tucked in
just off the M4 between Heathrow Airport and Maidenhead, a borough of
approximately 120,000 people.
Slough
is pronounced to rhyme with the word "now". That would pretty
much sum up what the town is all about too. This pretty town is keeping
apace with modern development, tearing down the old and heralding the
new.
Already
home to the Slough Trading Estate (the first trading estate of its kind
in England), there is also a major structural development on the cards
for Slough. A contemporary "Heart of Slough" development
project will spring up right in the center of the town of Slough. This
unique construction will encapsulate many public buildings and spaces,
mainly for the expansion of information and technology. The "Heart of
Slough" was given the go-ahead by council in 2009 and completion is
envisaged for some time around 2018. This complex project will no doubt
capture much European and International interest due to Slough's easily
reachable situation near a major airport, rail links and roadways.
The town of
Slough has come a long way from the days soon after the First World War,
when it was well known as a central point for the repair of army vehicles
and a respite for the war-worn weary escaping from London.
Today
Slough stands proudly with more or less 98 formally registered buildings,
amongst these are churches, banks, cinemas, schools, a railway station,
hotels, pubs and restaurants. The restaurants and pubs carry intriguing
names such as "The King of Prussia" and "The
Ostrich", to name but two. It is anyone's guess how these names came
about.
Without
a doubt, this modern futuristic town called by the odd name of Slough and
so strategically placed, has a great future lying ahead. In summing up,
it would be apt to coin a modern phrase in keeping with the modernistic
thinking of this town - "Watch this space!"
