3 of the best summer adventure activities to enjoy in the French Alps

The French Alps are not just about skiing, snowboarding or après-ski. There is also a variety of fun adventure activities to experience during the summer months. Whether you are active and wanting exercise or adventure, or simply looking for relaxation on a summer holiday, there is something for everyone here. In this article, however, we cover the more adventurous side of life for those seeking an adrenalin rush.

Also, bear in mind all the beautiful holiday rental ski chalets and apartments are available for your holiday, but this time there is less snow in the vista from your window or balcony! Read up below on three of the top adventure activities to enjoy in the warmer months below

1. Paragliding in the French Alps

The Southern French Alps offer a wonderful 300 days of sunshine each year, making it the perfect location for paragliding. The Ecrins Mountains offer a unique microclimate which also makes for a great experience, but the area is still relatively unknown, meaning you won’t have hundreds of other people to queue behind before having fun!

If you are an experienced paraglider, you can immediately enjoy the lift in the area. Inexperienced flyers can try out tandem paragliding, where your instructor controls everything on your behalf, leaving you to simply enjoy the view. If you tend to be a bit of a thrill seeker, experience a sporty flight, which involves your instructor doing fancy manoeuvres and figures in the air. Should you want to learn more about the sport, various courses are available which normally run for a week.

2. Canyoning in the French Alps

Imagine ziplining across ravines, or abseiling down waterfalls. This is the kind of summer adventure holiday activity awaiting you in the French Alps. The sport is also the best way to experience some of the most inaccessible areas in the Alps, featuring some of the most beautiful landscapes.

Head to a canyon that offers natural swimming pools, beautiful waterfalls and huge boulders to climb over, making the Alps one massive natural and beautiful water park. Canyoning is great as a group or individual activity with a guide who shapes the activity to match your experience. Experience an easier randonée aquatique, or head to a steeper canyon which tests your limits with bigger abseils, slides and jumps.

2. Caving in the French Alps

One of the best areas to experience caving is the Devoluy massif in the Southern French Alps. This massive range of limestone mountains offers around 600 caves to explore. While experiencing some of the caves you may find tiny passages, which test those with claustrophobia, but there are also occasionally lakes and streams underground that bring to mind Jules Verne’s book, “Journey to the Centre of the Earth.”

While the caves aren’t exactly pretty, there are stalactites and stalagmites to see and in certain areas, you can explore underground rivers and streams in an inflatable dinghy, which Verne’s characters didn’t have access to. Bear in mind that if you are new to caving, you must head out with an experienced guide to avoid getting lost underground.

Have fun this summer by experiencing some of the best adventure sports in the French Alps. You will be back for more!
