3 Best Destinations For A Family Holiday In The Algarve, Portugal

Family holiday in The Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve in Portugal is a spectacular destination for a holiday or vacation all year round, due to its mild and sunny climate. Its endless idyllic beaches and sandy coves overlook the mostly warm and calm ocean are just waiting to be explored. Whether relaxing on the sand or getting more active with a range of water sports, this is truly a destination of note. However, with so many towns to choose from, which is the best for your next holiday? Here we explore three of the best destinations to visit on a family holiday in The Algarve in Portugal, namely Albufeira, Carvoeira and Sagres.

Where to stay in The Algarve, Portugal?

Many choices are available to travellers heading to the Algarve in Portugal. Depending on their needs, the whole region has many excellent hotels and bed & breakfasts to choose from. However, for those who prefer to be a little more independent, there is also a spectacular choice of luxurious holiday rental villas in Portugal to choose from.

1. Albufeira, The Algarve

Having transformed from a fishing village to a major tourism capital, Albufeira is also known as the gateway to the Algarve. It is also one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Portugal due to the number of foreign residents here. Meanwhile, the beautiful city has grown in popularity due to its excellent beaches, great hotels and friendly locals.

Meanwhile, Albufeira is also known for its excellent gastronomy and, at least for parents, great nightlife. Daytime activities are fun for the whole family, including dolphin watching boat tours, off-road quad tours and cave tours. One major attraction for the kids is the Algarve water park, along with its pirate shows and pools.

2. Carvoeiro, Portugal

As with most coastal destinations in the Algarve, Carvoeiro also offers spectacular beaches and craggy cliffs. The town’s charming streets are lined with white-washed buildings, with plenty restaurants and coffee bars. While the beautiful Praia de Carvoeiro is perfect for a day in the sun, it is also possible to enjoy a boat trip to the Benagil Cave.

Meanwhile, the Algar Seco cliff formation is truly beautiful, while a stroll on the boardwalk is always a treat. The kids will particularly love the Slide and Splash water park as well as the nearby Zoomarine, a theme and marine park.

3. Sagres, the quieter Algarve

For families seeking a quieter experience in the Algarve, Sagres is the perfect spot. The isolated village nestles on the western tip of the region and is like no other destination in Portugal. However, for families ,it still has plenty of restaurants and cafes, but is the total opposite of busy Albufeira. The beaches are just as golden, but with fewer visitors.

Meanwhile, active families with older kids can have fun surfing and, in fact, the village tends to be a cool surfing destination. It is also worth visiting the Cabo de Sao Vicente, a remote headland standing out on the most south-westerly point of mainland Europe, or generally hiking cliffside trails with stunning views.
