Five Best Beaches To Relax On A Gap Year In Vietnam  By Claire Ryman

Vung Tau Featured Hotels

Mui Ne

A five hour bus ride from Ho Chi Minh City, Mui Ne's lovely stretch of beach is a hot favourite for both tourists and expats looking to make the break from Vietnam's largest city.
Home to a great number of cheap hostels all jostling for competition among the gap year throngs, Mui Ne also has other attractions like the desert-like sand dunes of Doi Cat and a charming series of small fishing villages a little further up the coast.

Vung Tau

Only a half hours hydrofoil trip from the centre of Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau is where the Vietnamese flock each weekend to get some respite from another busy week ahead. Although not as quiet as Mui Ne or Nha Trang, Vung Tau is a much larger beach town and has plenty of good restaurants and bars to sample. Restaurant Good Morning Vietnam is particularly popular among gap year travellers for its pizza.

Nha Trang

The long coastline running the middle of Vietnam is perhaps the most beautiful part of the country and home to the busy coastal town of Nha Trang.

Famed for its many scuba schools and snorkelling tours, Nha Trang is close to many small islands that boats head out to for divers to enjoy coral reefs scattered nearby.   Asides from its stunning stretch of beach, the town also boasts busy nightlife with bars like Guava, Red Apple and Why Not running late into the night.

Phu Quoc

Just off the bottom of Vietnam, near the part of the country that borders Cambodia, is the island of Phu Quoc.

Largely unheard of as a gap year destination, the island is made up of untouched, pristine beaches making it a possible to have a spot all of your own. What's more is that hiring a boat out to snorkel amid the coral reefs is just as simple as heading to the port town of An Thoi at the foot of the island.

Hoi An

This UNESCO heritage centre isn't usually famed for its beaches, with travellers favouring its silk and tailoring outlets instead, but that isn't to say Hoi An's options aren't just as good as others.

An Bahn and Cua Dai beaches are short bicycle trips out of the centre of Hoi An and are close to several fun bars and cafes. Famous among backpackers for its great parties, Hoi An Beach Club on Cua Dai is just one of those.
