Madeira is a Portuguese
archipelago in the north Atlantic Ocean that lies between 32°22.3'N,
16°16.5'W and 33°7.8'N, 17°16.65'W. It is one of the Autonomous
regions of Portugal, with Madeira Island and Porto Santo Island being the
only inhabited islands. It belongs politically and culturally to Europe,
even if it can be considered to be a geographical part of the African Plate.
Madeira, known originally
to the Romans as the Purple Islands, was rediscovered, possibly accidentally,
by Portuguese sailors and settled by Portugal as early as 1418 or as late
as 1420. The archipelago is considered to be the first discovery of the
exploratory period initiated by Henry the Navigator of Portugal. It is
a popular year-round resort, noted for its Madeira wine, flowers, and embroidery
artisans, as well as its New Year's Eve celebrations that feature a spectacular
fireworks show, which is the largest in the world according to the Guinness
World Records.
The Autonomous Region of
Madeira is composed of Madeira Island, Porto Santo Island, Desertas Islands
and Savage Islands.
The archipelago lies about
360 miles from the coast of Africa, 535 miles from Lisbon, 230 miles from
Gran Canaria, and 480 miles from Santa Maria, the nearest of the Azores.

is a beautiful house with two separate apartments, a top floor with two
bedrooms and a ground floor with one bedroom, but with the possibilities
for sleeping 3 persons. It is situated in the posh villa area 5-10
minutes by car (10 Euros by taxi) from the centre of Funchal. It
is however just 2 minutes by foot away from good restaurants, supermarkets,
bakeries and bottle stores. Entire villa can be rented for a total
of 7 persons. The distance to the sea is 500 meters. The golf courses
are 5 and 10 minutes away by car. There is diving, tennis, walking,
jogging and sailing sports available in the immediate area. Funchal
is the city centre for shopping, 5 minutes away. |

Casa do Lagar (Ref: 34088), Self catering country house in Santana-Sao
Jorge, Portugal
The
guest house , 'Casa do Lagar' is located in Farrobo which lies in the province
of Sao Jorge on the north coast of Madieira Island - Portugal. Panoramic
view of the sea and mountains. The old guest house has been furnished in
a contemporary style whilst paying particular attention in maintaining
a calm and rural feel to the place. The most beautiful walks long
the north coast of Madeira are to be found within easy reach, making it
an ideal starting point to meet up with the main levada paths and tourist
walks in the middle of the island:-for example, the 'Laurissilva' a protected

Belo Horizonte is set in a magnificent position with an uninterrupted 180º
view over and across the Atlantic ocean. The two storey house sits on a
cliff above the pristine Garajau Natural Sea Reserve. This is a protected
nature site and is home to special fish, indigenous birds and even the
rare Mediterranean monk seal that swims in the area from its base in the
Desertas Islands as it searches for food. Vivenda Belo Horizonte
is 13 Km from the airport, 9 Km from the Funchal town centre and 20 Km
from the Santo da Serra golf club. It is also 1000 m
away from local restaurants, bars, kiosks, bakery, supermarket, rent-a-car
and tourism agencies. Another 1,500 m away diving schools, gym facilities,
and sea shore swimming is available. The village of Caniço is 2,5

do Retiro is situated near the Santa Teresa Monument , which was erected
by ancestors of the current owners, in the village of Canhas. The large
villa has open green spaces with Laurissilva trees from the indigenous
forest and diverse stone objects which were used by previous inhabitants.
Some of the utensils at your disposal are mills, a grape press, a spring
and a large barbeque. Recently renovated and offering a luxury standard
over 350 m² of living area, the house interior is decorated with century
old English, Indo-Portuguese and Madeirien furniture, which is distributed
throughout the five bedrooms, two of which have en-suite bathrooms; living-room
and dining room. The house is fitted to accommodate children, who, under
the age of 6 stay free of charge. - Five bedrooms, one on the first floor,
with satellite linked television and en-suite bathroom, and four bedrooms
on the ground floor, one of which has an en-suite bathroom. |
