During the 15th century,

The earthquake of 1755 however,
destroyed the majority of the city, which led to a major reconstruction,

History surrounds the visitor
to Portugal - it practically infuses the air. From the Convento de Cristo
in Tomar to the many impressive churches and cathedrals, there are numerous

The past has left Portugal
with many ancient treasures. Parts of the centre of Portugal date back
thousands and thousands of years. Even during the Bronze Age, the country
was already a strategic trading hub. The Roman occupation of Portugal saw
its skyline filled with imposing and impressive buildings, and due to the
quality of construction many are still intact today. The Great Wall of
Porto
is a great showpiece of ancient skills. The original layout was reconstructed
in the 12th Century and re-fortified in the 14th Century. It stretches
around the Hills of SÄ - and sweeps down to the river where the Customs
House and the mooring quay were located. The Romans also built a network
of roads linking important towns and cities, which is still used by traders
and tourists alike today.
| Central Portugal is home
to many historical sites, many with religious origins. The Shrine of Our
Lady of Fatima is one of the most important sites of Marian history in
the world, attracting over four million visitors each year. In addition
to its striking architecture, this shrine is said to be the place where
the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children in 1917. Each year,
visitors come to marvel at the monumental colonnade around the central
plaza or to admire the neo-classical construction of the Basilica of Our
Lady of Fatima.
A slightly less esoteric
experience, although just as interesting, must be the Capela dos Ossos
- also known as the Chapel of Bones. It was built in the 16th Century as
a solution to the growing number of monastic cemeteries in the region.
The result is a consecrated chapel in which human bones line the walls
and pillars. It is estimated that there are over 5,000 skeletons on display
here - apart from those of the monks themselves, which are kept in a small
white coffin in the chapel. |
