Cardiff - The Newest Capital in Europe   by R Miller

Featured hotels in Cardiff

Even though Cardiff was only made a city in 1905 and subsequently a capital in 1955, it has become one of the fastest growing and popular cities in the UK. Redevelopment over the past twenty years has turned Cardiff into a hot tourist spot, as well as attracting more and more students each year.
Cardiff began to be industrious in the 1900's (after becoming a major port in the transferral of coal) and has never looked back in terms of broadening itself as a city. Since then, Cardiff has added a Roman Catholic Cathedral and is host to the National Museum of Wales and the newly built Millennium Stadium. However, Cardiff isn't just a city filled with modern buildings and new design. Cardiff Castle has been stuck in its cement for nearly 2000 years. This mix of old and new gives Cardiff a juxtaposition which is fascinating. The castle has seen literally thousands of years of history, which is absorbed into the surroundings; an inspirational visit at a reasonable price.

A newer feature which Cardiff is proud to offer is the Millennium Stadium. Having opened in 1999, the stadium has brought some of the greatest sports and pop stars to the city, making Cardiff even more popular as a tourist destination. The stadium is the largest in the world, seating 74,500 people and is one of the only stadiums in the world with a fully retractable roof. For a relatively small fee you can take a tour of the stadium which includes visiting the dressing rooms, the actual ground, and even sitting in the Queen's seat.

For those who are fans of food and drink, Cardiff is the place for you. With the student population growing and growing, so are the numbers of bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants.
