Gothenburg (Swedish: Göteborg) is the second-largest city in Sweden (after Stockholm) and the fifth-largest in the Nordic countries.

Goteborg (Gothenburg) Featured Hotels

Situated on the west coast of Sweden, the City of Gothenburg was founded in 1621 by King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden. It lies by the sea at the mouth of Göta Älv—the river running through the city—and is the largest seaport in the Nordic countries.

Gothenburg is home to many students, as the city includes both the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology. Volvo Cars was founded in Gothenburg in 1927.  The city is a major centre in Sweden for sports and home to the celebrated IFK Göteborg, GAIS (Göteborgs Atlet- och Idrottssällskap, perhaps less celebrated but dearly loved by the city's inhabitants) football team and the Frölunda Indians ice hockey team among others.

Gothenburg is served by Landvetter International Airport, located 30 km (18.64 mi) southeast of the city centre. It is the second largest hub in Sweden after Arlanda International Airport north of Stockholm.

Traveling by bus to Sweden   by Terrence Howard

Goteborg (Gothenburg) Featured Hotels

Apart from mellifluous ABBA, mischievous Pipi Longstocking and peace-loving Alfred Nobel, Sweden means much more and visiting it is a delightful experience of the plethora of its forested mountains, fiord and island-strewn seas, ancient cities, weird villages and refined palaces. Being the biggest of the Nordic countries in Northern Europe, it offers unforgettable views in all of its three regions - The Northern, Central and Southern.

The best start of exploring the itinerary is, undoubtedly, the Central part with the magnificent capital Stockholm. The city's location is on 14 islands and numerous bridges at the meeting point of Lake Mälaren and The Baltic sea has generated logical comparisons to Venice and Amsterdam. The oldest area of the city is The Old Town and the small island of Riddarholmen with the cluster of the Royal Palace - the official residence in the Roman style architecture and house of the State Apartments - The Crown Jewels, The Hall of State and chapel Royal Armory and Palace museum. For those interested in the royal family's life there are two other palaces to visit - the permanent residence - Drottningholm Palace near Stockholm, also considered The North Versailles and the summer residence - Solliden Palace on Öland Island to the east coastline of the country.

Above the narrow houses along the cobbled streets rise three impressive churches - two from 13thC - Storkyrkan and Riddarholm and one German church with unique Baroque atmosphere.

Another highlight is The City Hall, famous for the Nobel Banquet, annually held on 10 December. It is perched on the edge of Lake Mälaren and its tower offers a breath-taking panoramic view. A benefit of a bus ride will be a tour of the attractive surroundings of Stockholm, most of which are on The UNESCO's world heritage list - Skogskyrkogården (the Woodland Cemetery), Drottningholm Palace and the remains of the Viking settlement. Equally exciting is a stroll in the 18thC parks - Hagaparken, Albano and Frescati as well as the unique park-museum with sculptures Millesgården.

After Stockholm, you have to decide which direction to follow. If it is the North, you will pass Falun - a UNESCO heritage list site, home of the Dalecarlian horse breed, and the birthplace of the painter Carl Larsson and enjoy the typical Swedish scenery of Darna with the eternally-blue Lake Siljan and towns like Rattvik, Leksand and Mora renowned for folklore festivals and boat tours.

From Southern Sweden, where the majority of the population lives you should visit Gothenburg /Goteborg -  the second biggest city with its right-angle crossing streets and canals. The must-see sights are The City Museum, which is actually the oldest building in Nordstaden Kronhuset area, Kronhusbodarna arts, craft workshop center, and the The Botanical gardens. The other city of interest is Malmo - the third biggest city and the squares series - The Big, The Small, The Gustav Adolf and David Hall, parks and adjacent beaches. For 20 minutes, you can pass the Öresund bridge and visit Copenhagen. On the western coast are also the port Helsingborg, the historic University City Lund. Still to the south is the marvelous district of Österlen with undulating landscape, beaches and orchards and the farming and field area of Skåne with hills and beaches.

The Danish word for coach holidays is billig busferie and if you want to book one, visit this website. It is in Danish but you can use Google Translator to understand it. More about traveling by bus you can find here.
