Visit Courcheval ski resort in the French Alps

Courcheval ski resort

A popular French Alps ski resort, Courchevel forms part of Les Trois Vallées, the largest linked ski areas anywhere in the world. The towns of the area are also named for the region, namely Le Praz (Courchevel 1300), Courschevel 1550, Moriond (Courchevel 1650) and Courchevel 1850. The numbers relate to the altitude (or whereabouts) of each ski resort.

Courchevel and Les Trois Vallées

Les Trois Vallées offers 600 km (373 mo) of pistes and an amazing 166 ski lifts. As the area has north-facing slopes, Courchevel usually receives the best snow in the whole area and offers terrain suitable for all levels of skier.

Skiing in the French Alps

As noted by the Telegraph, among the local slopes there are 19 black, 23 green, 32 red and 35 blue runs. Each resort village offers free ski lifts for beginners while the entire ski area offers chairlifts and fast gondolas, making it easy to get around the area quickly. Besides the excellent selection of ski lifts, each village is also linked by an efficient, free bus service making it easy to get around.

Getting there

Even though Courchevel is located in the French Alps, the closest airport is Geneva in Switzerland. After flying into Geneva Airport, it takes around 2 hours 14 minutes to travel from Geneva to Courcheval 1850, a distance of some 188 km (117 miles). When using a transfer service, skiers can relax and watch the gorgeous scenery go by until they reach their destination.

What else to do in Courchevel?

Besides the excellent ski facilities in Courchevel, there are many other amenities in each village, including restaurants, bars and a variety of shops. The village of Moriond features Aquamotion, a massive watersports center and water park. The center features indoor and outdoor pools, a surfing area with a wave pool, wild water rapids, a three-lane water slide and a climbing wall. For those who prefer relaxation, the center also offers a steam room, hot tub and sauna, plus a fitness center for those who wish to keep up with their daily exercise regime. Moriond also features the famous Moriond Racing toboggan run.

Each village offers an excellent choice of restaurants, and while there is a good range of luxury shopping to be done in all the ski villages, everyday grocery shopping is best done at the lower resorts. This is especially so with Moriond, as the town features some great supermarkets and a couple of boulangeries to buy a tasty treat.

Events in Courcheval

Having a look at the annual events calendar in Courchevel, February/March features the International Fireworks Festival. In April, Les Trois Vallées Enduro invites teams of three to take part in various on-snow events. Also in April, in the middle of the month, the Dynastar X3 mountain triathlon is held, with cycling, running and ski events.  The year ends off with the Ladies Alpine World Cup giant slalom in December.
