| About
the area and activities:
Piton
Mountains
The
most spectacular are the Gros Piton (2,619 ft) and the Petit Piton (2,461
ft) which are old volcanic forest-clad plugs rising sheer out of the sea
near the town of Soufrière on the W coast. A few miles away
is one of the world’s most accessible volcanoes. There are soufrières:
vents in the volcano which exude hydrogen sulphide, steam and other gases
and deposit sulphur and other compounds. There are also pools of
boiling water. The mountains are intersected by numerous short rivers;
in places, these rivers debouch into broad, fertile and well-cultivated
valleys. |

The
course is a beautiful and challenging Par 36-9 hole facility stretches
from the powerful 510 yd. Par 5 first hole to the more subdued 162 yd.
Par 3, Ninth Hole, all of this giving the professional, amateur or novice
golfer more fun and relaxation than can be imagined. This setting,

| Sulphur
Spring Waterfall
A number
of walks or journeys in the mountains can be undertaken, lasting from half
an hour to a complete day. They originate from a weak spot in the crust
of the earth of an enormous collapsed crater. These smoking sulphur vapours
have unpleasant penetrating odours. The water in the craters, blackened
by the iron sulphate still maintains a temperature of 171 ° Centigrade
or 340 ° Fahrenheit

Nightlife
The
annual St Lucia Jazz Festival in May is now an internationally recognized
event, drawing large crowds every year. Most concerts are open air and
take place in the evening, although fringe events are held anywhere, anytime,
with local bands playing in Castries at lunchtime. As well as jazz, played
by international stars, you can hear Latin, salsa, soca and zouk, steel
drums or Bob Marley. For more details www.stluciajazz.com. Tickets from
US$35 or a season pass US$230.
The
normally sleepy fishing village of Gros Islet holds a popular jump-up in
the street each Friday night, from 10 PM, music, dancing, bars, cheap food,
(try the grilled conch from one of the booths selling local dishes), is
rather touristy but enjoyed by night owls. |
