Now it seems that almost everybody has a Smartphone such as an iPhone, Blackberry or Android, all come equipped with all kinds of apps that means you can do so much more on the move than in the past. For a holiday, the main use of such a device is for navigation purposes using the map functions. With these apps you can look at a map of exactly where you are in the world, right down to a street view so if you were to get lost (or not have any idea where you are going in the first place!) you can use the map to see where you need to go by asking the phone for directions. 

A word of warning though – you must look at whether your phone provider allows “international roaming”, and if not you should activate it otherwise it will be very expensive to use the data or phone features abroad.

These used to be the realm of children, however now many adults use handheld, portable games consoles such as the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP to keep themselves entertained at airports and on the long flights. There are so many adult-orientated games nowadays that it can help you while away those hours. A laptop can also serve the same purpose, with games available on PC that will also help you while away time.

A new generation of technology has recently starting to become popular – the e-Book reader. An e-book is essentially an electronic version of a book and can be read on these devices. It is a very expensive thing to have with you by the beach, however on the plane or in the airport it is much easier than having a big stack of books with you – they will all be on the reader!

So there is definitely a role for technology on a holiday, but do remember that the reason you are going is to spend time with loved ones and relax, so try not to take your work with you on these technological devices!
