Hidden From The World Deep Within The Unspoiled Masai Mara

The Masai Mara consists of the National Reserve encircled by the contiguous conservation areas of Trans Mara, Koyiaki (also spelled as Koiyaki), Lemek, Olchorro, Olkinyei and Siana, collectively owned by local Maasai tribes. Game park fees are charged in all of these areas. Wildlife freely roam and graze throughout the vast Masai Mara Ecosystem under the patrol of armed rangers to ensure animal preservation. There are no boundaries, fences, or walls to obstruct the mass movement and migration of animals, neither within the Masai Mara nor as animals mass migrate to and from Serengeti National Park, just across the border in Tanzania.

The Masai Mara and the Serengeti effectively form one contiguous ecosystem, and jointly share honors for hosting the annual spectacle of the Great Migration. The advantage of staying at the Royal Mara lodge and camp is that it is situated directly on the Mara River in the richest game viewing section of the entire Masai Mara Ecosystem: the Western Masai Mara. We operate our camp game drives along the Mara River sections of Western Koyiaki and the Western National Reserve, including Musiara Marsh and the Mara Serena crossing point. It is here in the Western Masai Mara that the largest number of wildlife congregate for river watering and dramatic river migration crossings.

The Royal Mara is ideally situated for safari game drive viewing. The lodge and camp is set out in the Koyiaki conservation area approximately five miles upriver from the world renowned Koyiaki-Kichwa migration crossing point. Leopard Gorge and Musiara Marsh made famous by the BBC's Big Cat Diary program are just a four mile and seven mile distance respectively south of the Royal Mara. The other well known crossing point at "Mara Serena" is only a fifteen mile game drive down river from the Royal Mara. Several lion prides are within proximity of the lodge with the "Maternity" pride on our periphery, the "Aitong" pride to our north and the Musiara Marsh, "Acacia Woodland," and Ridge prides to our south. In contrast to the National Reserve area, the Koyiaki conservation area allows game walks enabling us to offer our guests a fulfilling safari experience.
