3 Places To Chill Out In Beautiful Peru

Panoramic view of Machu Picchu

Located in South America, Peru is a beautiful country. Its landscapes include a part of the Amazon rainforest plus ancient Incan cities nestling in the Andes Mountains. History lovers explore Machu Picchu and is surrounding area, rich in archaeological sites, including the Sacred Valley and the Inca Trail. Others head to the capital city of Lima on the Pacific Coast of Peru, to explore the rich colonial center and museums with collections of pre-Colombian art.

While Machu Picchu is one of the major attractions of Peru, there is much more to this fascinating country. For those who want to simply chill out, rejuvenate and relax, the following are the perfect locations to choose, including canyons, lakes and waterfalls.

1. The Colca Canyon, southern Peru

Located around 100 miles from Arequipa, the Colca Canyon is a popular spot to visit. With a depth of some 10728.35 feet, Colca is one of the deepest of its kind in the world. The River Colca runs through the canyon, which also includes the Colca Valley. The Colca Valley has pre-Inca roots, while its towns were founded during Spanish colonial times. Residents of the towns are people of the Collagua and Cabana cultures and still maintain their ancestral traditions. This includes the pre-Inca stepped terraces on the sides of the valley, known as andenes.

Take a hike through the Colca Canyon, watching the Andean condors soaring above you. Meet the friendly locals and buy handmade souvenirs to take home.

2. Lake Titicaca and the Titicaca National Reserve

Lake Titicaca, Peru

Lake Titicaca lies across the border between Peru and Bolivia. It lies high up in the Andes Mountains and is known to be the highest navigable body of water in the world. Titicaca is also one of the largest lakes in South America.

History says this is the birthplace of the Incas, as many ruins can be seen in the area. The locals believe the lake is the birthplace of the sun. When hiking the surroundings, it is possible to see the remains of the pre-Inca Tiwanaku, Pukara and Collas cultures. Click here to learn more about the lake and its history.

In the area, the Titicaca National Reserve is a place to view rare aquatic wildlife, including the famous giant frogs. In the hills, watch the farmers working, with men wearing sandals from recycled truck tires and women in their colorful bowler hats and petticoats. Meet the tame and friendly llamas that accompany the farmers. On the lake, see the floating islands where the locals have made their homes.

3. Gocta Falls, Chachapoyas near Gocta

Located in the province of Chachapoyas in Amazonas, Gocta is a perennial waterfall, with a height of around 2,500 feet. It is said to be the third-tallest, free-leaping waterfall in the world. First and second highest are Angel Falls in Venezuela and Tugela Falls in South Africa. The water falls into the Cocahuayco River and can be seen from several miles away.

The locals have known about Gocta Falls for centuries. However, it was only in 2002, when a German explorer, Stefan Ziemendorff discovered the site, that it became known to the outside world. Surrounded by lush greenery, Gocta Falls are well worth the half-day hike it takes to get there!

Relax and chill out in Peru on your next vacation, exploring the beauty and culture along the way.
